Live at The Hive – 2/4/23

February 4, 2023

the story

WOOOOOO!!! This one was awesome. It’s always great to be back at The Hive. Our favorite place in town. Everyone donate your life savings to them RIGHT NOW.

Opening up the show was Keegan’s other band, Privacy House, in their first show ever. Compared to our first show (also at The Hive, we did really bad), it was a night-and-day difference. Lots of exciting things happening with that band. Go check them out on Instagram.

Also: Amoeba Arena! Our old high school friends Grant and Jeremiah started up an amazing “twinkle pop” band that we couldn’t have been happier to have on the bill with us. Amazing stuff, especially “Spudgun.” Can’t wait for that one to get a release! And according to Grant, the last ever live performance of Pelicanesis’ “We Like Ike.” A true national tragedy, but at least we were there to witness its swansong.

As for us, we think it was one of our best shows yet. The place was packed, and we saw crowd engagement like we never have before at our other shows. It really is amazing to look out and see people smiling in the crowd. It’s an incredibly gratifying feeling to be able to put on a show that makes people genuinely happy. Sorry to get too sappy on you there, it won’t happen again. Promise.

Our performances were pretty solid across the board. Keegan was having a rough time up there, having just played another set with Privacy House, but he pulled through and put on a solid performance even though his voice gave out midway through. Kudos to Keegan. Two sets in two hours is hard work.

This was our first time playing Marauder in a long time, and we had forgotten how much fun that one is. Lots of headbanging in the crowd. It’s funny, that song is never the one we would have expected people to headbang to – we would have guessed more Dinner at Barkham’s – but this one gets people moving. Maybe we’ll have to play it more. We stopped playing it for a while because we always mess it up somehow, but this time it went well.

We also added on Seven and Seven Is at the absolute last second before starting the set. Given the circumstances, we did pretty well on that one too! Always a joy to play that one. We’ve got another cover coming up that we’re super excited to play, especially David. He’s getting a new synth setup, and it’s gonna be used for this upcoming song by one of his favorite bands.

After the show, we were approached by a lot of people who told us they really loved the performance. We always appreciate comments like that more than you could know, and this show was especially heartwarming. Shoutout to Eric, who approached us with an offer to produce our music! What a great guy.

Angus absolutely killed it on tambourine. Put us all to shame on that stage, it was humiliating. A worthy holder of the “temporary member of Downcoast” title.

We also want to give a shoutout to our buddy Preston Valles, whose photos turned out unbelievably well at this show. Who knows how many times we’ve shouted him out, but he’s deserved it every time. A trooper and a good friend.
