If you’re a fan of 90s Nickelodeon, you’ll know where the title comes from.
This song was inspired by a couple things – My God is the Sun by Queens of the Stone Age is the most obvious one, but it’s also got a lot coming from Modest Mouse (in the prechoruses).
David wrote this one at like 2 AM when he got the idea for the outro melody. That’s where the song all started, and the rest was built around that. The main riff came next, then the prechorus, then the verses, then the chorus. Choruses come last for us a lot of the time, for some reason. The whole song was written in that one night, and the placeholder lyrics from that really haven’t changed. Still placeholders, though.
The song came together at practice really quickly, too. It’s pretty easy to play across the board. The only part that we tinkered with for a while was the main riff. We took a while to get the bass to sound just right.
David’s girlfriend came up with the second prechorus, actually! It’s the funniest part of the song, too, so huge addition there.
The song’s lyrics are definitely unfinished, but it’s generally about media literacy. Metal as hell.
There’s a few important references in there:
This is one of our most high-energy tunes, and the outro is a particular highlight. Goes a little further in the direction Dinner at Barkham’s went in.
You been waiting for me to come around
(Guess he doesn’t know, guess he really really doesn’t know)
Deep tides of the circles of sin, as I fall straight into the ground
(Guess he doesn’t know, guess he really really doesn’t know)
I’ve been on the road
Serpents inside of my headphones
Waiting for me to come home
You been slithering circles ‘round splinterin’ trees
Were you not a serpent?
And it’s not like me not to see what I believe
Were you not a serpent?
(You should be dead)
You been freezer-burned twice and still ye be
(Guess he doesn’t know, guess he really really doesn’t know)
In spite of the Atari collapse, ye still speak of eighty-three
(Guess he doesn’t know, guess he really really doesn’t know)
The sneaky snakes sneakily slithering
Shedding off skins, yes they’re littering
You been slithering circles ‘round splinterin’ trees
Were you not a serpent?
And it’s not like me not to see what I believe
Were you not a serpent?
(You should be dead)
Down by the banks of the ol’ Bates motel
Down in the road by the liberty bell
Hope fast approach, you will never return
See from the light of the cigarette burn
Water those flowers, and wish them all well
Water, the poison, the Aryan knell
Bite from the apple, as far’s you can tell
We’re all alone, being sent straight to hell
None yet – wait till we record it for real!

Great opener! We love playing this one. Probably our favorite song to play at the moment.
