Shrine Basement with Guerilla Toss

July 16, 2024

the story

This was our coolest show ever!

Guerilla Toss is a band I’ve been listening to since high school. They’ve always been a band I’ve really looked up to. So to get to play with them tonight was the most humbling experience of our “band career” so far.

I was talking with their singer Cassie about how they write their stuff. The way they’re able to shift keys, change meter, and chop & screw chord progressions is an unbelievable talent, and something I’d love to work on more for my stuff.

Cassie says it just starts like that, which is crazy. They just write their stuff like that from the beginning? Unreal. I know for me, I generally write something relatively standard, then try and find ways to make it weirder or more interesting after it’s written.

Their live show reminds us that we’ve got a long way to go if we want to make the impact they do. Definitely a huge source of inspiration for us. They absolutely shredded that stage.

Back to the show: it started out great for the first 30 seconds or so, then my guitar cut out entirely. Time to get a new one, I think. Not the first time that’s happened, but it is the first time it’s happened at a show. I’ve gotten it repaired 4 times now, and it’s no closer to getting fixed.

Being the professionals they are, the rest of the band kept playing and killed it for the rest of the song. I think we handled it really well, and we were able to borrow a guitar from No Can Fly. Very very cool people. Check them out, I’m a fan of their stuff.

I actually kinda loved the guitar I borrowed. WICKED tone. The guy in No Can Fly built it himself, and it showed. Beautiful guitar.

The rest of the show went off without a hitch. We played Ivory Tower and Insomniac’s Delight for the first time ever, and they both went well.

Quick sidebar on Ivory Tower: that’s one of my favorite songs by my favorite band. It’s about time we played an Everything Everything song. We had SO MUCH FUN playing that one. It’s a super fun song to sing for me.

Insomniac’s Delight seemed like a hit too. I got three or four people coming up to me to say they liked that one after the show. Definitely indicative of the direction we wanna go in next.

After the show, we got to hang out with Guerilla Toss and Doug Martsch (who was at our show and bought a shirt, btw) and pet the tour dog for a half an hour or so. He was a sweetie named Watley. One of those moments you don’t forget.

Such a cool night!
