Live at The Shredder – 8/27/23

the story

Our first show with the CRT/VCR setup on stage! This one was really exciting. Very chill show with some great friends and family there. Fantastic comeback/warmup after so much time off.

You have no idea how long it took to get all the logistics of having a CRT and VCR up on stage figured out. A few highlights:

  • Realizing the shaking from the bass disrupts the VCR’s tracking of the tape, so we need to use foam supports to keep it stable
  • Finding out that muting the TV does NOT mute its RCA audio output, meaning we need to unplug the output every time we want to switch to the camera so it doesn’t cause feedback
  • Realizing we need a soundcheck VHS tape now. Our pick ended up being Scooby-Doo and the Cyber Chase, which is pretty fitting

People really seemed to like the CRT stuff. It’s a really fun way to make the show more interactive and unique, and we think we’ll be using it at every show from now on. There’s so much potential for really interesting things we can do with it – next show, we want to have someone play Sonic the Hedgehog on a Genesis plugged into the TV during a song. We love this sort of stuff.

This show was the debut of a new song, Ahhhh!! Real Serpents. It’s named after a particular Nickelodeon show from the 90s. One of our favorites we’ve ever done, especially the outro. One thing we’ve come to realize is that almost all our songs have outros instead of third choruses. We should write some more songs with three choruses in them, mix it up a little. Anyway, people really liked the song! We got a few comments about it after the show. That’s always so great to hear.

We played with some other fantastic bands, especially the touring act, Miniluv. Incredibly nice people who invited us to play a show with them in Denver. Go check them out, their live show is killer.
