Live at The Hive – 2/17/24

the story

Back at the Hive!

We always love coming back to play here. This one was more of a “secret show.” We didn’t announce it until a few days before, and didn’t do any promotion for it. We wanted it to be a bit of a smaller-scale, more laid-back show.

A few cool things at this one! First off, the live debut of our new tune, Duet with a Robot. It marks a total shift in direction for us that we’re really excited to explore more.

Duet with a Robot is a jazzy, bossa nova piece that’s still got that signature Downcoast vibe. It’s a toughie to play – the chords are a bit of a stretch. The chorus is good ol’ Downcoast territory, though – starts on a strong D minor, has a descending bassline, rapid chord changes. That’s what our sound really boils down to in the end, I think.

When we were planning out the set for the show, we realized that I only needed the keys for Duet with a Robot, and we were trying to think of ways to bring them in at other points during the show so we weren’t lugging that huge setup around for just one song. So we decided to play 2029 on the keys, and it actually sounded WAY better than normal. So we’ll probably play that song on keys when we can from now on.

I think this is the last time for a while that we’ll play Seven and Seven Is. It’s a fun one, and super easy to play, but it’s time for a new cover to enter the set. We’re getting a little tired of playing that one. Next up: maybe Everything Everything?? Finally?
